As Suchomel et al. (2016) note, &#8220;muscular strength is a critical component of athletic performance and influences power output, rate of force development, and injury resilience.&#8221; CMJ-derived impulses give us insight into both propulsive (concentric) and deceleration (eccentric) phases.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, Heishman et al. Matu\u0161inskij)  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By using CI and EBI, we can:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify force production vs. control imbalances  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Detect neuromuscular fatigue earlier  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Target interventions more precisely  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Quadrant Model Explained<\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In our model, each athlete\u2019s CI and EBI values are compared against group averages. As McMahon et al. (2014) show, CI and EBI are highly reliable markers when extracted from force plate systems under consistent conditions.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During preseason, we assessed senior players from a first-division professional football team using dual force plates (VALD ForceDecks). Each player performed two countermovement jumps (CMJ) with hands on hips, allowing us to capture <strong>Concentric Impulse (CI)<\/strong> \u2013 the area under the force-time curve during the upward phase \u2013 and <strong>Eccentric Braking Impulse (EBI)<\/strong> \u2013 the area under the curve during the braking phase.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Creating the Quadrants<\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We calculated team mean values for CI and EBI and used them as thresholds, dividing players into four quadrants:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High CI \/ High EBI<\/strong> \u2013 well-rounded force and velocity capabilities  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High CI \/ Low EBI<\/strong> \u2013 strong propulsive ability, braking deficit  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Low CI \/ High EBI<\/strong> \u2013 strong braking capacity, low propulsion  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Low CI \/ Low EBI<\/strong> \u2013 both phases require development  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why This Matters<\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking only at the raw values shows where a player falls in the quadrants. However, linking these data with <strong>injury history<\/strong> und <strong>positional demands<\/strong> gives far more actionable insights. For example:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A winger with low braking values but high velocities in 10m test might be at risk in high-speed decelerations.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A central defender with low propulsion might struggle in aerial duels (don&#8217;t forget the context of the duel).  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By identifying whether a player is lacking in the <strong>braking phase<\/strong> oder <strong>propulsive phase<\/strong>, we can refine exercise selection:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Braking deficits<\/strong> \u2192 targeted eccentric overload, deceleration drills, and high braking impulse plyometrics  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Propulsion deficits<\/strong> \u2192 concentric emphasis lifts, loaded jumps, and maximal effort sprints  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is a great time to have these tools to not only analyse the demands of each exercise, but also to see whether we can achieve better and faster adaptations through quadrant-based profiling and targeted exercise selection.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visualizing Player Profiles<\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is the distribution of players based on their CI and EBI scores. Dashed lines represent team mean values for each metric.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"912\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Frame-25-1024x912.png\" alt=\"CMJ Quadrant Model\" class=\"wp-image-8061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Frame-25-1024x912.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Frame-25-300x267.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Frame-25-768x684.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Frame-25-1536x1368.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Frame-25-13x12.png 13w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Frame-25.png 1557w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Key patterns emerged:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attackers often had <strong>high CI but low EBI<\/strong> \u2014 indicating explosive output with lower braking control  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some defenders exhibited <strong>high EBI and low CI<\/strong> \u2014 capable of absorbing load, but lacking propulsion  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A minority fell into the <strong>low CI \/ low EBI<\/strong> quadrant, signaling overall neuromuscular suppression or fatigue  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our case, the data showed something important: <strong>8 out of 26 players \u2014 around 31% \u2014 fell into the Low CI \/ Low EBI zone (red)<\/strong>. This is the \u201cdanger\u201d group, the outliers who have deficits in both propulsion and braking.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Players in this red zone might:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lack <strong>raw strength qualities<\/strong> in both eccentric and concentric phases  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be <strong>less experienced<\/strong> or physically less developed   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have a higher risk of fatigue-related drop-offs and performance inconsistency  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have already written a few times about how strength training in football is sometimes organised in a very repetitive, almost \u201ccopy-paste\u201d manner \u2014 in a circuit format, always the same number of sets and reps, the same tempo, repeated for 20 weeks without significant change. While this might keep players \u201cticking over,\u201d it often fails to address individual needs or specific neuromuscular qualities that can directly impact performance.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strength training is far more than just doing 3\u00d710 squats every week.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example Program \u2013 Quadrant 2 Player (High Propulsive \/ Low Braking Ability)<\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For a player in Quadrant 2, our goal is to <strong>improve eccentric braking ability<\/strong> while maintaining high concentric output. Here\u2019s a sample 4-week microdosed plan:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Weekly Wave Pattern (Sets per Day):<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Monday:<\/strong> 2 sets  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tuesday:<\/strong> 1 set  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wednesday:<\/strong> 3 sets  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Thursday:<\/strong> 1 set  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reps per Week:<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Week 1:<\/strong> 3 reps  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Week 2:<\/strong> 4 reps  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Week 3:<\/strong> 5 reps  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Week 4:<\/strong> Add weight and return to 3 reps  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other Parameters:<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rest:<\/strong> 3 minutes between sets  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>RIR:<\/strong> 3 (stop with 3 reps left in the tank)  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exercise Selection (3\u20135 key movements)<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nordic Hamstring Curl<\/strong> \u2013 Slow eccentric phase (3\u20134 sec) to build hamstring braking strength.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trap Bar Deadlift from Deficit<\/strong> \u2013 Controlled lowering, 1s pause above the floor to reinforce force absorption.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Drop Landing to Stick<\/strong> \u2013 Step off a 40\u201360 cm box, absorb the landing, stabilise instantly.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Barbell Hip Thrust<\/strong> \u2013 Explosive concentric, controlled eccentric.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Split Squat with Long Eccentric<\/strong> \u2013 3\u20134 sec lowering, 1 sec pause at the bottom.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why This Approach Works<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Targeted Adaptations:<\/strong> Exercises are chosen specifically to address braking deficits while maintaining propulsive ability.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Load Management:<\/strong> Wave loading and microdosing avoid chronic fatigue and fit smoothly into football training schedules.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Neuromuscular Freshness:<\/strong> Small but frequent doses keep players \u201cprimed\u201d without compromising match readiness.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Progressive Overload:<\/strong> Gradually increasing reps and then adding weight ensures long-term gains.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Weekly Microdosing Plan \u2013 Quadrant 2 Player<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Table-4-1024x599.png\" alt=\"Microdosing planquadrant model\" class=\"wp-image-8062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Table-4-1024x599.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Table-4-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Table-4-768x449.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Table-4-1536x898.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Table-4-2048x1197.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.ultrax.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Table-4-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schlussfolgerung<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Force profiling through CI and EBI gives us a much deeper look at <em>how<\/em> players produce and control force \u2014 not just <em>how much<\/em> they can produce. By using the quadrant model, we\u2019ve been able to quickly identify athletes who are excelling, those with targeted deficits, and a small but significant percentage (31%) who are lacking in both propulsion and braking qualities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For these \u201cred zone\u201d players, traditional one-size-fits-all strength programs won\u2019t cut it. Instead, by applying microdosing principles and tailoring exercise selection to their specific force strategy profile, we can address deficits more effectively while managing fatigue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can track whether interventions are working, adjust quickly, and avoid wasting valuable training time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next article, we\u2019ll take this approach one step further \u2014 interpreting another club\u2019s values and <strong>comparing them against Premier League norms from the VALD Hub<\/strong>.
